History of Fish and Chips – Fish and Chips is a popular meal in both Australia and England. Although there are many opinions over who invented the meal, history shows it was an Englishman named Joseph Malin who first cooked fish and chips together back in 1860. The main reason for his invention was to provide a nice warm meal for people working at the factories during their shifts. His invention was a hit and soon became popular throughout England. In the 1900s, when Australia was developing its own identity, it became one of the most popular meals.

But in the 1920s and 1930s Fish and Chips were more commonly found in shops not homes because of a greater need for convenience. This is where the modern fish and chip shop has its roots.
